
Some of the books in the Elephant and Piggie series won Theodor Seuss Geisel Awards for best American books for beginning readers. The books include Today I Will Fly! (2007), We Are in a Book! (2010), Let’s Go for a Drive! (2012), A Big Guy Took My Ball! (2013), and I Will Take a Nap! (2015). There are 25 books in the series, published between 20. In the next book, Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity (2007), Trixie takes Knuffle Bunny to school. It is about the panic that can result when a small child’s favorite stuffed animal cannot be found. Willems was inspired to write Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale (2004) because of an experience he had with his daughter. Pigeon also stars in a number of other books, including Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! (2006), The Pigeon Wants a Puppy! (2008), and The Pigeon Needs a Bath! (2014). Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! was named a Caldecott Honor Book in 2004. Pigeon’s emotions throughout the book range from determination and hope to anger and frustration. For the rest of the book, Pigeon tries to convince the reader to let him drive the bus.

The book begins with a bus driver telling the reader not to let Pigeon drive the bus. Willems created the book from a doodle he made of a pigeon. Willems’s first published book was Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (2003). During that time he also created two animated television series: The Off-Beats (1996–97) on Nickelodeon and Sheep in the Big City (2000–02) on Cartoon Network. Willems won six Emmy Awards during his nine years at Sesame Street. Four years later he began writing for the children’s television program Sesame Street. He studied animation at New York University, from which he graduated in 1990. Willems enjoyed sketching and drawing as a child, and he drew comic strips for his high school newspaper. His family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, shortly after his birth, and he grew up there.

Willems was born on February 11, 1968, in Des Plaines, Illinois. He created some of the most popular characters in books for young children, including Pigeon, Knuffle Bunny, and Elephant and Piggie. American children’s author and illustrator Mo Willems produced more than 50 children’s books.
